Humana and DrFirst Launch Program to Improve Medication Use for Chronic Conditions

LOUISVILLE, Ky., and ARLINGTON, Va. – Aug. 13, 2025 — Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and health technology company DrFirst have introduced a program to address gaps in care for patients with chronic illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The first phase will focus on improving the use of statin therapy among eligible patients, aligning with a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) quality measure.

Statin therapy has been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk, improve outcomes, and lower overall healthcare costs for certain Medicare patients. Through the partnership, Humana will use DrFirst’s prescription orchestration platform to deliver statin therapy recommendations directly into providers’ clinical workflows. Providers can approve the recommendation with a single click or indicate why it is not appropriate for the patient.

“We’re not just flagging care opportunities—we’re making sure they get to providers in a way that’s timely and easy to act on,” said Bethanie Stein, Pharm.D., President of Pharmacy at Humana. “By reaching providers in their workflow, we’re freeing them to focus on patient care, which in turn can help address gaps in care, promote quality, and lead to better health outcomes.”

DrFirst’s prescription orchestration platform enables real-time collaboration among providers, pharmacies, and payers, creating a streamlined process for medication management. With integration across more than 270 electronic health record (EHR) systems, the platform can be deployed quickly in a variety of care settings.

“This partnership is about more than innovative technology; it’s about better patient outcomes,” said Laizer Kornwasser, CEO of DrFirst. “By making medication recommendations actionable in real time, we’re removing friction from the prescribing process and improving care.”

The collaboration extends a decade-long relationship between Humana and DrFirst, which began in 2015 with the launch of the first real-time prescription benefit tool, giving providers patient-specific coverage, cost, and prior authorization details at the point of prescribing.
