Hospital for Special Care Extends Partnership with Altera Digital Health Through 2032

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – September 9, 2025Altera Digital Health, a global leader in healthcare IT, today announced that Hospital for Special Care (HFSC), one of the nation’s top long-term acute care hospitals, has renewed its contract for the Sunrise™ electronic health record (EHR) platform through 2032.

As part of the expanded agreement, HFSC will upgrade to Sunrise 25.1, the latest version of Altera’s flagship EHR, and will become the first healthcare organization to deploy Sunrise Health Record™, a new intelligent faxing solution designed to streamline administrative workflows and reduce errors.

Supporting Complex Care Across Connecticut

HFSC, which serves New Britain, Hartford, and Hebron, Connecticut, is the fourth-largest long-term acute care hospital in the U.S. and one of only two facilities in the country providing comprehensive care for both children and adults with complex rehabilitation needs and chronic diseases.

The organization has relied on the Sunrise platform for over a decade to support its clinical and operational needs. With the upgrade to Sunrise 25.1, HFSC will gain access to 700+ updates and new features, including:

  • Centralized billing tools for streamlined financial management
  • Simplified denial and appeals tracking
  • Automated provider-level adjustments to improve revenue cycle performance
  • Real-time insights and workflow automation to free up clinicians’ time for patient care

“Altera has been a true partner through every phase of our EHR journey,” said Stan Jankowski, CIO of Hospital for Special Care. “This decision reflects our confidence in the Sunrise platform and team.

It’s not just about technology—it’s a long-term investment in the infrastructure and resources that support both organizational stability and clinical excellence.”

First to Implement Sunrise Health Record

HFSC will also be the first Altera client to implement Sunrise Health Record, a faxing solution designed to reduce manual inefficiencies in health information management (HIM).

The system embeds faxing directly within Sunrise’s HIM deficiency management workflow, enabling:

  • Single-click outbound faxing of deficiency notices
  • Automated inbound fax routing
  • Real-time fax tracking to improve patient safety and regulatory compliance

By eliminating the need to toggle between disparate systems, Sunrise Health Record aims to enhance communication speed, reduce human error, and ensure critical documentation is delivered seamlessly.

Driving Long-Term Growth and Stability

The renewal represents a shared commitment between HFSC and Altera to advance EHR modernization and operational resilience over the next decade.

“We’re proud to support HFSC as they continue their mission of delivering high-quality care to complex patient populations,” said Jay Adams, EVP of Sunrise at Altera Digital Health.

“Upgrading to Sunrise 25.1 and implementing innovative tools like Sunrise Health Record enables hospitals to keep pace with healthcare’s rapid evolution while strengthening operational foundations for growth and stability.”
