Powered by Passion: MEDITECH, Physicians, and CIOs Connect Over Personal Health Stories at Annual Physician and CIO Forum

WESTWOOD, Mass., Oct. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Health information technology isn’t just data, it’s about real people and their stories. At MEDITECH, healthcare is personal. Throughout the organization, empathy and passion drive staff’s commitment to develop, implement, and support an EHR that improves the quality and safety of care. This was one of the key messages delivered to physician and CIO attendees at MEDITECH’s October Annual Physician and CIO Forum in Foxborough, Mass.

“MEDITECH is powered by its passion to make a difference in the lives of care providers and their patients. Everyone has a healthcare story and MEDITECH provides a platform for that story to be told within the patient’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) — using technology to bridge connections between care providers and patients so they can receive the best care possible,” Helen Waters, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at MEDITECH said. “It’s amazing to hear how MEDITECH’s Web solutions are having such an impact on a patient’s care journey and enabling physicians to effectively and compassionately to do their job.”

The EHR pioneer continues to make great strides with its Web Ambulatory solution, with more than 3,000 providers in over 40 specialties using the first post-Meaningful Use EHR to treat patients. In addition, customers are implementing and going LIVE with Web Acute and Web ED. During the two-day forum, physicians shared their personal stories with MEDITECH’s Web solutions.

Physicians Equally Passionate About MEDITECH’s Direction
Designed by a team of physicians, MEDITECH’s one patient, one record approach addresses inefficiencies of physician documentation and raises the bar on the user’s mobility experience. Dr. Jeff Schleich, MD, family practice physician and Deputy CMIO at FHN (Freeport, Ill.), notices greater efficiency with accessing MEDITECH’s clinically-integrated Web EHR from a tablet.

“It’s exciting to be truly unwired and having access to the MEDITECH EHR from a mobile device. For instance, when you’re on-call, you’re able to access a patient’s record from anywhere on any device, enabling you to quickly treat that patient, even if you’re not in the same room as them,” Dr. Schleich said. “Another benefit from a wellness standpoint, I’m able to see the last time a patient had a flu shot or a colonoscopy. Before you’d have to flip through a chart to see if the patient is up-to-date, now this patient information is readily available.”

David Travis, DO, Cardiologist and CMIO at Grand View Health (Sellersville, Pa.) is impressed with the wealth of data available at his fingertips since going LIVE with Web Ambulatory July 2016, stating he believes it’s making him a better doctor. One particular patient visit, Dr. Travis recalls viewing a patient’s CT scan within the EHR. Dr. Travis was not the ordering physician of the scan, however, to get the full story on the patient, Dr. Travis read the CT scan and in doing so found a concerning mass.

“I informed the patient of the scan results and called an Oncologist who advised the patient have a PET scan — so before the patient followed up with their family doctor who ordered the CT scan, I already had access to the results and discussed with the patient, ordered the PET scan, and connected the patient to an Oncologist,” Dr. Travis said. “This wouldn’t have happened with another system because I wouldn’t have looked for the CT scan, but now that it’s given to me in the patient record, I can see so much more data and the immediacy of getting results is fabulous.”

Hospitalist and CMIO at Magnolia Regional Hospital (Corinth, Miss.), Amanda Finley, DO, was hands-on during the implementation, build and optimization of the hospital’s MEDITECH Acute, ED, and Web Ambulatory go-LIVEs.

“When we started this EHR journey, it was really doctor-driven. Our docs demanded a better EHR to treat patients — we have a high-volume of patients and we wanted an EHR that works as hard as we do,” Dr. Finley said. “Having MEDITECH’s EHR across our care-settings connects all the dots of a patient’s health story for improved care.”

Other forum highlights include an interactive panel discussion led by the FBI on guarding against ransomware and cyber attacks, 35 breakout sessions on topics such as exploring new revenue streams to succeed in a value-based healthcare model, MACRA in 2018, interoperability, surveillance, patient engagement, and two keynote addresses.
